Police: Girls’ School in Tzfat not cooperating on sexual assault claims

Ynet reports:

Israel police claim that the Kanfei HaYonah Girls’ School in Tzfat is not cooperating with the investigation into their school principal, accused of sexual assault on students.

The 39-year-old principal from Tzfat is suspected of sexual assault on girls who were students at her school, and reportedly also used the girls to do her housework and look after her children. In the course of the investigation, suspicions also emerged that the principal had defrauded the Education Ministry out of hundreds of thousands of shekels. Today, specialist psychologists from the Education Ministry succeeded in speaking to some girls who are currently learning in the school, who said the principal would often kiss and hug them. The principal was suspended from her role two months ago and she is under a court-ordered house arrest.

Several parents in the school defended the principal, claiming that she was devoted to Kiruv and spiritual guidance, and that the accusations must be a misunderstanding of the close emotional relationships she built with some of her students. Parents complained that they hadn’t been kept informed of the investigation by the Education Ministry, and that the school as a whole was suffering.

However, sources in the Education Ministry said that the school had not been cooperating with the investigation and was blocking their attempts to see if there were more victims among current or past students. Some sources blamed the Haredi division of the Education Ministry, which has a high level of autonomy, for helping to block the investigation and for protecting the school.
