Frederick Martin Karp, 50, a rabbi from Beachwood, Ohio, was extradited to Maryland on Wednesday after being accused of sexually abusing a Baltimore County child for the last five years. The young girl was only seven years old when the alleged sexual abuse first took place, according to a Jan 29. report from NBC’s WBAL-TV in Baltimore. The young girl is now 12.
The rabbi was being detained at the Baltimore County Detention Center. The judge set his bail at $500,000, reduced from the original bail set at $5 million. State prosecutors argued that Karp should have been held with no bail. Karp’s attorney managed to persuade the judge that his client was not a flight risk, according to The Baltimore Sun.
The judge did command Karp to relinquish his passport though. When police went to Karp’s Ohio home to arrest him on the child sex abuse charges, they found out that he was on his way to Israel. Karp was taken into custody at JFK International Airport in New York before he made that trip to Israel – a trip his lawyer argued had been planned for months. Karp’s bail review hearing was held in Baltimore County on Thursday. He appeared in court via video wearing an orange prison jumpsuit.
Police in Baltimore County said that they first learned of the child’s alleged sexual abuse on New Year’s Eve. Karp has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor, perverted practice and second- and third-degree sex offenses. Reportedly, Karp was friends with the family whose little girl was sexually abused. Officials say that the abuse began in 2009 and lasted through December 2014, which was the last time Karp visited the family in Maryland.
Prosecutors in a Baltimore County courtroom said Thursday that the victim’s “two sisters disclosed that they too had been inappropriately touched.” Karp has since been suspended from his post as the director of spiritual living at the Menorah Park Center for Senior Living in Beachwood.
