MIAMI: SCHECK HILLEL EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED CHILD PORN POSSESSION

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. (WSVN) — Parents at a South Florida school are demanding answers days after an employee was arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography.

Douglas Sands was taken into custody Thursday for possession of child pornography on his home computer. His arrest report reads, “[On the desktop] that was located in Sands’ bedroom … the hard drive yielded 30 pornography videos. The videos depicted young females and males between the ages of 4 and 10 years old engaged in sexual acts.”

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Sands, a Broward resident, worked in the IT department at Scheck Hillel Community Day School in Northeast Miami-Dade, a prominent Jewish day school that has an elementary, middle and high school.

A concerned mother said she is upset the school failed to notify her about Sands’ arrest. “This is a little shocking to me. I, just as a parent, would like to be notified of something like this,” she said. “I have a young child at the school, so if that is the case, some kind of notification needs to be brought to the parents’ attention.”

According to the arrest warrant, Sands told detectives, “He has seen videos of child pornography on his computer.” It is unclear how long he worked at Scheck Hillel and if he had any interaction with children.

As of Monday afternoon, parents of Scheck Hillel students had not been notified of Sands’ arrest. School officials did not reply to 7News’ calls for comment.

If you have any information on Douglas Sands, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a reward.

This arrest once again illustrates that no individual or institution is immune from Child Sexual Abuse. We call on Yeshivas, Synagogues, day schools, and Mikvahs to put safety measures in place to protect children from abuse.

Join JCW for an evening dedicated to educating and raising awareness about the dangers of abuse and in sending a clear message of support with survivors of abuse. RSVP and invite your friends to a JCW event this coming Sunday (2/15) in Aventura.
